BygonesBy- (Sargent House)

Teased since March, the finally available debut album from Bygones is a spastic/melodic guitar/drums dichotomy.  The duo consists of drumming whiz Zach Hill (of Hella and all other bands) and tech-ish guitarist Nick Reinhart (of indie mathists Tera Melos).

The project sounds very much like one would imagine, but a complex catchy-ness is inherent in nearly every track.  The duo’s intermittent utterances and backing harmonies fit better than any conventional vocals likely would.

We all know that Zach Hill of Hella and Marnie Stern’s band may very well be the world’s craziest drummer. The man sounds like an 80s hair metal percussionist merged with an ADHD child whose muscle mass has been enlarged to Hulk-like proportions. When this editor saw him with Hella a few years back, he successfully shattered a hi-hat that was, of course, propped up by a large cinder block (normal mounting just isn’t strong enough).

Hill has teamed up with Nick Reinhart of Tera Melos for a new project they’re calling Bygones. The debut album, cleverly titled By-, is dropping on August 4 through Sargent House, and we highly recommend you buy it right now. You can sort of guess what the object of vicious aural fixation will be like, but just in case, we’ve provided you with a sample song, the title of which alone sort of explains it all.

Oh, and did you notice whose pretty mug is on the cover? None other than Amber Coffman of Dirty Projectors. Nice tie-in, fellas.

Zach Hill Is Hella Busy

Zach Hill Is Hella Busy

Five-albums-in-one-year busy

Zach Hill Is Hella Busy

Tentacle-armed Hella drummer Zach Hill is an absolute technical beast and a serious stage presence, so it probably shouldn’t surprise anyone to learn that he is a very capable guy. But five albums in one year? Plus touring? Plus more Hella action around the corner? That is ridiculous. That makes Hill’s buddy Prefuse 73 look like the kid who fell asleep every day in study hall. Indie rock drummers, you are officially put on notice. Zach Hill is on his grind, and he’s probably willing to replace you if the rest of your band decides they don’t like you. So stop hogging the tour-van radio.

We already reported that Hill had teamed up with Prefuse main man Guillermo Scott Herren to form the duo Diamond Watch Wrists, whose pretty-good-so-far debut Ice Capped at Both Ends is due via Warp on May 5. We also reported that Hill is beating up drums for the Mars Volta's Omar Rodriguez-Lopez in el Grupo Nuevo de Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, whose first album, Cryptomnesia, will also come out May 5 on Rodriguez-Lopez’s new label Rodriguez-Lopez Productions. That’s two albums in one day! Ice Capped at Both Ends and Cryptomnesia are Zach Hill’s Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II

But those two albums make up less than half of Hill’s planned 2009 output. Next up:Bygones, Hill’s new duo with Nick Reinhart, guitarist for hyperactive Californian math-rockers Tera Melos. Sargent House will release By-, the first Bygones album, on June 23. (I guess the second album will be called Gones.)

Here’s the cover, featuring Amber Coffman of Dirty Projectors. It is making me want lunch:

Later this summer, Porter plans to release Aggressively Humble, the debut from Hill’s new trio CHLL PLL. The other members of the group: Zac Nelson of Prints and Hexlove, and Zachariah Dellorto Blackwell of Danava. Clearly, this band should’ve been called the Zack Attack, but I guess that was taken

Finally, Hill will somehow find time later this year to record Face Tat, his second solo album. Scott Herren will produce and co-write, and Hill expects to have it out by the end of the year, because he is a crazy man.

Hella, now back down to a duo after adding more members on recent albums, will also release an album sometime early in 2010. I don’t know why they don’t just go ahead and drop that one this year as well.

Also on Hill’s itinerary: A solo set at the Breeders-curated All Tomorrows Parties weekendin May, a Diamond Watch Wrists U.S. tour in July, and a Bygones tour in late summer and early fall. Hill will probably also drum for Marnie Stern on her forthcoming European dates. Yikes. At this rate, Hill’s probably going to need to clone himself like Michael Keaton in Multiplicity pretty soon.

Bygones and CHLL PLL tracklists after the jump.
